Guzzler MSX
A downloadable game
Introduction
Guzzler is a classic arcade game released by Tehkan in 1983 and later released for the Sega SG-1000 console. The game was never ported to any other system.
Until now.
Since MSX computers share its CPU and video processor with the SG-1000, this was the version that has been chosen as the foundation for this new MSX game.
Gameplay
Guzzler is a maze game where the player controls a creature who can drink (or guzzle) water from puddles, then extinguish fires and monsters spawned from those fires. Each level is a single-screen maze.
That must be extinguished to complete the level, also spawn fire-themed monsters which pursue the player. The main character can attack with three blasts of liquid before becoming empty. With each blast of liquid, the character moves faster and gets closer to being an empty outline. When empty the character is a shell of a sprite, but moves faster. Liquid is replenished by drinking from puddles.
Occasionally, an alcoholic beverage appears in the center of the screen. Picking it up causes the character to refill.
Improvements and limitations
Guzzler for MSX has some improvements when compared to the SG-1000 version:
- The main title has been redesigned to leverage the colour capabilities of the video chip (TMS9918).
- The pattern graphics have been redesigned (walls, bottle, glass, etc.).
- Enemies have a flashing colour, adding a more dangerous appearance.
- The number of different mazes has been increased from 3 to 11.
- There are up to 9 different wall styles now.
- The PSG sound has been modified to simulate a chorus effect.
- Difficulty has been recalibrated up to 20 progressive levels instead of 10 with new features (for instance, variable number of hits to extinguish a fire).
When compared to the original arcade version, Guzzler for MSX has some limitations:
- The maze dimensions is 22 x 22 blocks only, so the mazes have been heavily redesigned to fit the size.
- The arcade version has 16 different mazes, versus 11 on the MSX version.
- Due to TMS9918 limitations, the arcade version has multi-coloured sprites.
- When the player picks the glass or the bottle, only the refill feature happened, while the arcade version also stops enemies for some seconds.

Very nice. I love Guzzler, because when I was a kid, in the mid-80s, there was an arcade machine for this game at our outdoor cummunal swimming pool. There was a small room in this swimming pool, where you could buy food and drinks and there were always two arcade machines in the back corner of this room. For several years, these were the games "Guzzler" and "Xevious", and I played both there quite often, with some friends.
I have a question, since I have a Master-System but no MSX computer. The two systems are technically related, I read in the internet, wouldn't it be possible, to port your MSX version of "Guzzler" to the Master-System, or would you be able to do that? As far as I know, only certain things need to be adjusted, that a MSX game also works on the SMS and there can be found several MSX-to-SMS game-ports on the internet therefore. I just don't know how it works.
Hi,
MSX games cannot be run on a Sega console without being reworked (or at least, patched with new routines for the specific hardware of the console). It works similarly the other way around.
However, there is an official Sega SG-1000 version of Guzzler. The Master System should be able to run SG-1000 games directly, without any modification.
Just try downloading the ROM from wowroms or a similar repository and use it with a Master System emulator (or get the original SG-1000 cartridge if you want to use your own original console).
Hello. Good to hear, that there's a SG-1000 port of the game too. Will try out this version on my real Master-System in the next days, by using my Everdrive X7.
I already had a look on this SG-1000 port with the Kega Fusion emulator today. Your MSX port looks a bit better, I would say. But gameplay-wise, this SG version is also not bad. Thanks.
Guzzler is a game, I really like and it's a bit sad, that there is no port of this game for other well-known systems like for example NES, Atari-7800, C-64, Atari-800, Master-System, Amiga, Mega-Drive, PC-Engine, Atari-ST or Super-NES. Nearly all of the old Arcade classic-games have their ports on these systems, but this game was forgotten, it seems.
Yup, you're right. The only offiicial versions of Guzzler so far were the arcade and the SG-1000.
My MSX port is heavily based on the SG-1000 one, but I added many more mazes, new graphics, better sound and some gameplay improvements. Buy I would say 70% of the gameplay is identical among both versions, so just get the SG-1000 version and enjoy it with your Everdrive.
I might consider creating a new SG-1000 version with the new improvements from the MSX port. It's just a matter of expanding the 8K ROM to a new 16K one (that is still supported by the Sega console).
Yes, creating a new SG-1000 version is a good idea, maybe also some more colors could be added, but I don't know, how many this very old console can handle, at the same time?
If you're thinking about new ports of the game anyway, then maybe also a new Master-System port would be conceivable (it could have improved graphics then, because the SMS is technically a bit stronger) or perhaps also a C64 port, that would be really cool too. Or a Amiga-500 port of the game, this could even have the same graphics, the Arcade version has. Just suggestions of course. :-)
The SG-1000 port exists already so it would be very straightforward (just adding 8K more to the ROM to store the new mazes and pattern styles).
I've just purchased a new Commodore 64 Ultimate (still waiting for it to be shipped) so porting Guzzler sounds like a good idea for my first project on such computer.
I'm glad you and your friends ported this fun game and happy I didn't miss it🤩 Wonderful colorful graphics and nice tones. Keep it up bro and thank you very much!
